class has 5 ESL students. The class has 1 autistic and resource
student. Students will be positioned in individual desks which will
be staged like a congressional hearing: teacher at podium in the
front of the room, 3 desk in a row in the middle for those being
questioned, other desks in rows on each side of the class.

- Guided Practice:
Have the
students get move into desks on the sides of the classroom. Explain
to them that your school is conducting a cold war with the rival
school. Explain that you believe that there are spies and
sympathetics to other school in our midst. You will call at least
three students to be interrogated. When conducting the
interrrogation, ask the following questions:
- Do you love your school?
- Have you ever been a member of the [rival school's mascot] Party?
- When did you join the [rival school's mascot] Party?
- Who recruited you to the [rival school's mascot] Party?
When students try to answer, quickly ask another question or try
to twist their answers. Also, when students try to deny
something, wave papers around stating they are witness testimony
refuting the student's claims.

- Independent Student Practice:
When
finished with the interrogations, have the students not called take a
few minutes and consult with each other on each case. When this is
complete, have each student declare whether each of the three
students called are guilty.

Do a quick
review of the concept of McCarthyism. Ask the following discussion
questions:
- After witnessing our hearing, how do you think it would have felt like to be in front of a real hearing like the House of Un-American Activities Committee?
- Do you think McCarthy went too far with some of his allegations?
- How do you think this affected the lives of every day Americans?
